I don't have much personal experience with it, but it might be worth looking into ClamWin, it's the only open source i've heard of that's even worth mentioning. On the other hand, you could pull a drive and put it in an external USB enclosure and scan that with no perceived penalty other than the fact that, it might not boot when you put it back after it has be inoculated but, this did take care of your issue of someone being too cheap to spend $45.00 bucks. We aren't in this business for our health and pirating software just is not worth it. I told the customer that it would cost him the price of my time and the price of the A/V software to which he balked. I arrived at the client site, cold booted my scanner and got busy sure enough subverted. I had a fresh box of A/V and the latest virus sig file. I built the disk, told my wife I'd be back in twenty minutes.

They asked me to bring my A/V software to remove the virus back then, MacAfee had a bootable command line version that would scan but couldn't remove virurses.

They had a virus they got from and I quote "my pirated UCLA dial up.". or I can for you, but once again I will bill you for my time.Ībout fifteen years ago I got a call from someone who'd been referred to me. Drive died? Well take your receipt back to the store, and they'll give you a new one. Either way it works better for me, and then I also do not have any hardware warranties or RMA to do. Some customers want the convenience and are happy to pay for it, others will use their own gas and drive to the store. and my time (30 minutes to an hour) end up being a far better markup than a typical 30% on the drive itself. I send them a link to the one I'd recommend and say, "You can pick it up at Memory Express for this much, here's a link, or we can pick it up for you, we do not mark up our hardware however we will bill you for the time involved in picking it up for you." I actually adopted this mentality for hardware as well.Ĭustomer_A asks for a new hard drive. and realizing there was just no margins in hardware. I've always figured that I'm charging them for my time not the software.Īfter owning a computer store in the late 90's. I always try to follow the EULA aggrements, but some of them are border line outrageous and I don't know of anyone else that does. Can I update/install adobe and Java, or would that be considered distributing it? Without their consent I can't put these programs on an image, but can I update/install them for the client?

I don't use the software, but install it and quickly go over so the user is better prepared in the future.ĥ. does non commercial use mean I can't install ccleaner, malwarebytes, avast, or ninite to better the user I am helping.

I could rebuild the system, but would have to buy a full license of Windows 7 since Eula states you can't create images/copies of OEM machines.Ĥ. How can I compete with those around me that illegally use these programs, when I would have to charge an extra $40 to use malwarebytes, purchasing a 1 year license when I do.ģ.

I am not sure about Microsoft Security Essentials.ġ. I have read the EULA's and found that CCleaner, MBAM, and all other popular AV's are not allowed for commercial/business use. I have been looking at what other companies and users use and the general answer is: Ccleaner, malwarebytes, and a few other AV tools. I want to start charging for virus removal.
